The most important welfare adopted by the Malaysian Army is training. This is perceived as the number one welfare for the soldiers. I totally agree with this idea, because otherwise soldiers will get injured or killed during operation or even during exercise.
But we must not see training in a very formal way ie individual or collective [team] training. Informal training is equally or more important, depending on the situation. Leaders, managers or supervisors must use every opportunity to train or to guide his guards.
Reminding of mistakes they made is part of training too.
I happened to be part of an initial team looking into welfare of security guards in IPTA. To me, employing them until the age of 45 to 50 [on the average] is just appropriate. Beyond that, I would see a bunch of sick, non-motivated security guards. Unfortunately we give them the duty of taking care very important assets of our country.
But if they can perform beyond that age, some kind of monetary rewards should be given to them. Lecturers of Medical Faculty know that standing long hours, irregular sleeping time especially for that age would affect their health.
Where should they go after 50? I am suggesting for them to be retrained and sent to other duties. But if certain individual have potentials, they should be trained earlier on so that they may end up as officers. We have a case where a formal security guard of Universiti Malaya is now a Professor in one of the university in the country.
Talking about good governance and good HR practices in universities which are FULL of experts, I am yet to see their products of research, of international conference deliveries or perhaps just a local TV experts carried out in their own workplace. None. This is just a simple basic humane physical needs. Old man and sickness has very significant co-relation. Hope somebody please look into this.

Teknik Meronda Berkesan
Syarat [1] tahu apa tugas beliau secara am dan tugas khas/spesifik. Beliau kena tahu apa tugas dan tanggungjawab sebagai pengawal ronda. Seterusnya apa tugas khas untuk masa tersebut. Contohnya; kejadian curi motorsikal sedang kerap berlaku, dan oleh kerana itu beliau kena perhati semua gerak geri yg boleh disyaki.
[2] Kena tahu kedudukan semua jenis alat pemadam api supaya boleh bertindak lebih cepat jika berlaku kebakaran. [3] kena tahu selok belok kawasan dan bangunan yg beliau sedang ronda. Kena tahu mana kawasan panas dan mana yg kurang panas.
Kepada Penyelia, beliau kena tahu mana lokasi pengawal selalu ponteng dan lepak, jalan yg sepatutnya mereka guna dan pelbagai teknik memonteng.
Paling penting, setiap hari dan setiap syif, Penyelia kena beri taklimat dan kena ingatkan. Kita sudah langli dgn keadaan di mana tidak ada serah menyerah dan tidak ada taklimat. Orang ramai pula hanya ingin lihat ada pengawal...itu saja.

Meronda pada waktu siang dan malam amat berbeza dari pelbagai aspek. Ancamannya, matlamatnya, tekniknya, ancamannya serta peralatan ronda. Penyelia dan Pengawal kena tahu segalanya. Hasilnya mereka akan lebih berhati-hati dan berwaspada. Pada dasarnya, waktu malam adalah waktu yg lebih berisiko.
Ikut teori, laluan ronda hendaklah berubah-ubah. Tapi ini sukar dilaksanakan kerana ia tertakluk kepada banyak faktor. Begitu juga waktu meronda. Apa yang paling penting ialah, ronda mesti dilakukan sebanyak yg mungkin.
Latihan. Ketua kena sentiasa menegur cara pengawal meronda. Teguran inilah yg dikatakan latihan yg berterusan. Teguran mesti ditutup dengan ajaran. Sudah tegur, beritahu apa yg sepatutnya pengawal itu buat.
